I took my friend out for dinner and to see Observe and Report (Funny movie btw). Afterwards she drove me home. On the way we hit this intersection, she turned into the left turning lane, pulled out a bit, waited for the cars to clear the intersection. Light turned yellow, then red, she made the turn as it was clear now. I was looking across the street and also noticed it was clear, I looked over at Val(my friend) for about a second and a half then looked back. This Red Van was in the intersection, I yelled at Val to stop which she did. The Van smoked the front end of the car we were in deploying the airbags.
I immediately noticed a burning smell, I opened my door looked under the car, there were fluids leaking. I quickly got Val to exit her side so we could get clear of the car in case a Michael Bay type explosion were to occur. I checked myself and Val for injuries; remarkably there were none. She was upset, the Van which hit us was on the other end of the street, looks like it tried to keep going through regardless.
I called the cops to bring fire fighters (for the spill/possible fire) and an ambulance just in case, took Val across the street (we were in the median) and I yelled at the driver from the Van asking if anyone was hurt. He completely ignored me, which pissed me off. After the cops took care of the scene and got val and I plus the douchebag tht hit us down the road to a parking lot to get our stories, The driver of the van wound up getting charged for running the red light.
It was interesting because if we were a second more into the turn that Van would have turned me into street pizza, and Val even might have gotten killed. Another interesting note, the driver looked about 60 years old... clearly this man has lost his faculties and was unable to respond to a light that was clearly red.
Val and her car got taken back to her town (bout an hour outside toronto) and I walked home which wasn't far from where I was.
In the end I'm alive through sheer luck and I haven't even left for Afghanistan yet... I wonder what craziness awaits me there!

Sorry to hear about that. It's going to be an interesting road for sure...or you used up all your bad/good luck now even before the trip! ...Which is either good or bad news...
Good for you though! Nice to know that you and your friends are fine.

Yikes you got lucky!
The drivers in my home town and in alot of other places in England i've been aren't any better. I once saw I guy it pissed off by some bus driver, he gets out of his car in the middle of the street and starts mouthing off. Sure makes me wish I lived somewhere else at times, having said that the people in the town I am when I'm at Uni are pretty nice.
